Game Overview

Dragon's Lair on the NES came out in 1990, published by Elite Systems. It was a time when arcade ports were common, but this one stood out because it tried to bring Don Bluth's animated movie to a console that couldn't really handle it. You could tell they put effort into it, even if the hardware wasn't quite up to the task.

You control Dirk the Daring, a knight trying to rescue Princess Daphne from a dragon's castle. The game plays screen by screen; each room presents a danger, and you have to press the right direction or action button at the exact moment to avoid death. If you hesitate or guess wrong, Dirk dies in some elaborate, silly way. The objective is to survive the castle's many traps and enemies, one quick decision at a time. It's brutally difficult, and you'll die over and over learning the timing for each screen. Playing it feels like a mix of frustration and fascination, watching the same animations repeat as you slowly memorize the right moves.
