Game Overview

Final Fantasy II came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed and published by Square. It was one of the early titles that helped define the console's role-playing game library, arriving at a time when developers were still exploring what the hardware could do with larger worlds and more complex stories.

You control a party of characters, including the dark knight Cecil, as you travel across an overworld map and explore towns, caves, and towers screen by screen. Your main goal is to stop an ancient evil from being revived, which involves gathering crystals and confronting a growing military threat. Combat uses the series' traditional turn-based system, where you input commands for each character and watch the actions play out. The game introduces a more personal narrative than its predecessor, with characters joining and leaving your group as the story demands. It can be challenging at times, especially in some of the longer dungeons where resources are scarce. Playing it feels like slowly uncovering a grand, sometimes somber adventure where your choices in building the party really matter.
