Game Overview

Final Fantasy III originally released in Japan for the Famicom in 1990, but the version I played was the 2012 PlayStation Portable release by Square Enix. It was a solid, straightforward port that brought the classic into a more modern handheld era without trying to reinvent it. On the PSP, it felt right at home alongside other remastered RPGs of that time, offering a clean, pixel-perfect experience with some quality of life updates.

You control a party of four young warriors, the Onion Knights, who are suddenly tasked with restoring balance to the world by relighting the four darkened crystals. The job system is the heart of the game; you assign roles like Black Mage, White Mage, or Knight to each character, and they gain abilities specific to that class. Exploration is methodical, moving screen by screen across an overworld and through dungeons filled with random encounters. The difficulty is notable, especially in some of the later dungeons which demand careful resource management. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes demanding puzzle where your party composition makes all the difference.
