Game Overview

Final Fantasy III (or VI, if you're keeping track of the Japanese numbering) is one of those games that sticks with you long after the credits roll. You start off controlling Terra, a girl with mysterious powers, in the middle of a snowfield—no tutorial, no hand-holding, just this haunting music and a sense that something bigger is coming. And boy, does it ever.

The world feels alive in a way few RPGs manage, even now. One minute you're sneaking through an imperial base, the next you're at an actual opera house trying to stop an assassination. The characters are what really sell it though—Locke’s this lovable rogue with a tragic past, Celes is a former general with a killer sword arm, and Kefka? Oh man, Kefka starts off as this cackling clown and somehow becomes the most terrifying villain in RPG history.

Combat’s got this great mix of classic turn-based stuff and the esper system, which lets you customize your party in weird, fun ways. Want Sabin to suplex a ghost train? Go for it. Want to teach your moogle black magic? Why not. The pixel art’s gorgeous, the music’s legendary (Nobuo Uematsu at his absolute best), and the story goes places most games wouldn’t dare. It’s not just nostalgia—this one’s the real deal.
