Game Overview

Final Fantasy III - Retrans (or FFVI to most of us) is one of those rare RPGs that sticks with you long after the credits roll. The fan retranslation smooths out the old script—suddenly, Edgar’s terrible flirting lands even worse (in a good way), and Kefka’s madness feels way more unhinged. You start with Terra, this amnesiac girl who can melt soldiers with magic, and before long you’re recruiting a circus strongman, a king who’d rather tinker with machines, and a ninja with a literal attack dog.

What gets me every time is how the game swings between ridiculous and devastating. One minute you’re suplexing a ghost train, the next you’re watching a whole city burn because some clown in a feather coat thought it’d be funny. The opera scene? Still holds up—though good luck nailing the timing if you’re playing on original hardware. And good luck not getting attached to at least half the party, only to realize you’ve been rotating the same four characters for 20 hours.

It’s the kind of game where you’ll forget you were supposed to save the world because you’re too busy breeding chocobos or grinding for that one sword in the dinosaur forest. The retranslation just makes it all hit harder.
