Game Overview

This is a fan-made English patch for the original Japanese NES release of Final Fantasy I & II—not to be confused with the later GBA remake. It's a bit rough around the edges (as you'd expect from a 1987 NES game), but there's something charming about seeing where the series started. The translation feels faithful, though don't expect modern quality-of-life stuff like auto-targeting or MP instead of spell slots.

You'll get both games in one package, with II being the real draw since it never officially made it to the West back in the day. Just be ready for some old-school grinding—those random battles come fast, and the difficulty spikes are no joke. The sprite work still holds up surprisingly well, though.

If you're curious about Final Fantasy's roots, this is about as authentic as it gets without digging up an actual Famicom cart.
