Game Overview

I picked up Final Fantasy I & II on Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a release from Square Enix that bundled two classic adventures into one cartridge. It was a solid fit for the handheld, offering deep RPG gameplay during an era when portable systems were really starting to embrace longer, more involved experiences. The games felt right at home on the GBA, with bright, clear visuals and a convenient save system that made it easy to play in short bursts or longer sessions.

You control a party of four characters, customizing their classes and equipment as you journey across an overworld map and explore towns and dungeons screen by screen. The main goal in the first game involves restoring light to four corrupted crystals, while the second follows a more narrative-driven quest against an oppressive empire. Combat is turn-based; you input commands for each party member, then watch the actions unfold. Youโ€™ll spend a lot of time grinding levels, managing spells, and delving into multi-level dungeons filled with traps and powerful bosses. The pacing can feel deliberate, even slow by modern standards, and the difficulty remains substantial, especially in some of the later dungeons. It feels satisfying to build a strong party and gradually overcome the challenges the world throws at you.
